A Weekend of Fun and Competition: Mastering your craft.

Troy Brathwaite December 10, 2023

To become a better sports photographer, you need to practice your skills and learn from the experts. Here are some tips that helped me to improve my sports photography:

  • If you want to be taken seriously, buy or rent photography equipment that suits your needs and budget. You will need a camera, a lens, a tripod or monopod, a memory card, and a bag. For sports photography, you will need a camera that has a fast shutter speed, a high ISO, and a continuous shooting mode. You will also need a lens that has a long focal length, a wide aperture, and a fast autofocus.

  • Learn about the sport you plan to document, such as the rules, the players, the teams, and the history. Different sports have different speeds, distances, and movements, which require different settings and strategies. You also need to be aware of the safety and the etiquette of the sport and respect the rules and the boundaries. This can help you understand the context and the significance of the game, and anticipate the best moments and angles to capture.

  • Put in the hours practicing at local clubs or parks, where you can find people playing or practicing different sports. You can also attend amateur or professional sports events, where you can get access to more action and excitement. You can use these opportunities to hone your skills and build your portfolio.

  • Develop a portfolio that showcases your best and most recent sports photos. You can use an online platform or a website to create and display your portfolio. You can also use social media to promote your work and reach a wider audience, it’s free.

  • Join a photography club or a community where you can network and share your photos with other photographers.
